Tom Friedman does Tom Friedman
Tom Smith

This is so unfair.  I would be willing to say unexpected but dumb things if only I could have my own column in the NY Times.  Here we learn our young President gets credit for the uprising in Tunisia, Egypt and across the Arab world.  How, might well you ask?  Not by doing anything. That would be so, so 20th century, pre- flat- world thinking.  No, it is just by being who he is, young, handsome, and of color, that the O inspired this great movement toward, uh, freedom or something.  Maybe he deserves another Nobel Peace Prize?  TF's other causes of this perhaps great historical moment are even more unexpected.  Google Earth.  Palestine's new PM.  I guess that's why TF gets to produce more global warming gases than the next ten thousand of us put together.

I don't think it's fair to blame Obama for Tom Friedman being an idiot. Friedman was an idiot long before anyone knew who Obama was, after all.

I think Obama does deserve some credit as a political symbol in Arab countries, although I think he will be judged more by his actions (or lack thereof).

And in the process he was able to remind us again of how great China is. It's the kind of genius you have to experience to appreciate.

Obama’s “brilliant” strategy amounts to walking up to the plate with the bases loaded hoping the pitcher hits him with the first pitch.
