What is Philosophy?
Mike Rappaport

An entertaining but I think correct answer is provided by Jeffrey Kasser in this Teaching Company course on the Philosophy of Science.  Kasser writes:

The best characterization I know of philosophy comes from one of my teachers: "Philosophy is the art of asking questions that come naturally to children, using methods that come naturally to lawyers."

I put it to you that we are not yet there.

Ladies and gentlemen of the Jury, you may very well feel that our proximity to "there" has yet to be fully established; it is entirely possible that we have only the word of the driver on this matter to help you make an assessment of what is, it can hardly be gainsaid, a knotty problem; indeed you may even now be asking yourselves the ticklish question "Does Daddy know whether we are there yet?" and tending to the view that Daddy's certainty in this matter is perhaps incongruent with his record of infelicitous opinionating on questions of not only propinquity in the spatial dimensions to the location of the desired destination but also of the elapsed time necessary to diminish the deviation between our present whereabouts and that aforesaid terminus.

Little comes naturally to lawyers. That seems to be in the nature of the schooling, and the work.
