Oh dear
Tom Smith

This is depressing.  Seems like a shift to a Euro welfare state should take more than sixty votes.

This captures it pretty well.  Strange times.  It feels like a 9/11 we are doing to ourselves.  As bad as the consequences for health care as we know it are going to be, even worse will be the fiscal consequences.

More here.

"Seems like a shift to a Euro welfare state ...": it's a bit early to tell, but it seems unlikely that you'll end up with a welfare state as, um, organised as, say, the French or German ones. The Bismarck model differs in several respects from the DC Nostra model.

I agree that it's a shame that our country can be taken this far down the road to a Euro welfare state just by getting a majority in the House and 60 votes in the Senate. But as we've just seen, it can be. Elections have consequences, occasionally dire consequences.

And unfortunately, politics and policy are a ratchet that turns only left. It's sort of like the IRA said after failing to assassinate Margaret Thatcher back in the 1980s, "You (British security) have to win every time. We just have to win once." The lefties have been waiting all this time to take the House, the Presidency, and get 60 votes in the Senate. When Al Franken stole the Minnesota election, it gave the Dems their filibuster-proof Senate majority and this effort to socialize healthcare was put in motion.

Of course, they had to contend with a few so-called moderate, blue-dog Dems, but every last one of these "moderates" will vote with the Dem's left leadership when it really counts (although they sometimes have to be paid a few hundred million from the Treasury to do so). I hope there's a bloodbath in the House and Senate in the 2010 elections and most of these blue dogs lose their seats. Those from hard-core left areas like Pelosi won't lose their seats. But maybe enough of the sheeple could rally to take her majority away.
