John Updike is dead Tom Smith

Unwelcome news.  I renew my objection to this whole getting old and dying thing.

I was never much of an Updike fan.  I just found his men too weak to be very interesting.  Perhaps he was just much more charitably inclined than I am.  But he did love his country more than most American novelists, that's for sure.
