"If there is hope, it lies in the proles"
Mike Rappaport

These words uttered by Winston Smith in 1984 come to mind these days.  In fact, my thoughts are increasingly drifting to 1984 as I contemplate the next four years.  While I have not been supporting John McCain, no one should mistake that as any kind of embrace of Obama and Pelosi.

I remember well the election of Bill Clinton in 1992, with the two houses controlled by Democrats.  The Democrats were poised to pass national health insurance, the media was behind it in a big way, and it seemed like nothing stood in the way.  I think Hillary shared that view.

But then a miracle happened.  Big Brother was stopped.  How did that happen?  Harry and Louise?  Elizabeth McCaughey?  Hillary's hubris?  All played a part, but a big part of what stopped it was the more conservative Democrats.

This is a possible hope for the future.  The new proles.  I don't know how many of them there will be, or whether they will be effective.  But I believe that a James Webb or a Ben Nelson could create problems for the Democrats, especially where filibusters are possible.

I know, it does not seem like much to rely upon.  But it happened before, and it can happen again.
