Zimbabwe’s generals tell Mugabe to stop purge or face coup | The Times & The Sunday Times

President Mugabe has been warned by Zimbabwe’s generals that if he does not stop his purge of senior figures in the ruling party he risks a coup.

In an unprecedented rebuke that will deepen the country’s growing political crisis, General Constantine Chiwenga, head of the armed forces, yesterday condemned the “gossiping, backbiting and public chastisement” that he said has split the ruling Zanu-PF party and could degenerate into serious conflict, which the military could not tolerate.

I remember Sir Edgar Williams, The Warden of Rhodes House, telling me how excited he was about Robert Mugabe when he was a fresh young general. Now Mugabe approaches his end after his long, long, corrupt reign. If it's not already over that is, and he's just a puppet for his wife.
