More than 1,000 desert tortoises are taking a trip with the Marine Corps this month.

The fastest they'll ever go.

I live with three (registered) California Desert Tortoises. They are supposedly the slowest of all tortoises. But they always get where they're going. The Marines have a gung-ho tortoise protection program that includes signs in the vehicles at their Mohave sites reminding the drivers to check under the vehicle for tortoises before driving.

A registered tortoise: is that like registered artillery?

More like registered armor.
