China increases diplomatic pressure to rein in ally as Trump menaces

No solid evidence has yet emerged that China is acting on or cajoling its only ally, North Korea, to halt or relinquish its march towards long-distance nuclear attack capacity.

But the Trump administration is signalling that at the recent summit with President Xi Jinping, and in conversations since, Chinese leaders have indicated privately their readiness to push Pyongyang more heavily in return for an American abandonment of earlier plans for a trade war.
