Liberalism’s Big Bet - The New York Times

Yes, the convention’s showmanship was strikingly unifying, bipartisan, moderate — but Hillary Clinton’s domestic agenda is not. She’s running as a liberal, full stop, with a platform well to the left of where her party stood five or 10 or 20 years ago.

We adjust for population with murder rates. Why not for mass shootings? - LA Times

The rate at which people were killed was virtually the same: 0.083 per million people in the EU versus 0.089 per million people in the U.S. But the injury rate in the EU was more than twice as high: 0.19 versus 0.087.

If you compare the U.S. to individual countries in Europe over the same time period, the U.S. had the 11th highest fatality rate. Because of Anders Breivik’s 2011 attack at a summer camp, Norway had the top spot — 1.9 per million people per year. This rate was 21 times higher than that of the U.S. But other advanced countries such as France, Switzerland, Finland, Belgium and the Czech Republic also came in above the U.S.

Important study. I can't believe it hasn't been done before, though maybe it has.

Trump’s response to Khizr Khan was a mess « Hot Air

The real problem here is that Trump made mistakes that were easy to avoid. Attacking a grief-stricken gold star mom is something you should know right away is a bad idea. You don’t have to agree with Mr. and Mrs. Khan’s politics to show respect for their loss. Frankly, if you can’t manage that much for a grieving gold star mom you don’t deserve to be America’s commander-in-chief.

Islamist terror could kill off the West's liberal values

To British ears particularly, the public utterances of the French president and his officials seemed bizarrely out of focus with the actual bloody event. Even to the French, the idea that the gratuitous killing in Rouen should be met with high-flown rhetoric about democratic ideals began to seem absurd, especially when more and more details were revealed about the legal oddities.
