If Hillary wins in 2016 ....

Our country is supposed to be a republic not a monarchy, but do you realize that if Hilary gets elected in 2016 -- which seems increasingly plausible -- by 2020 we'll have been governed by Bushes and Clintons for 24 of the last 32 years? If she gets reelected in 2020, when I'll be 62, Bushes or Clintons will have been POTUS for 45% of my life or 64% of my adult life! And, in the interests of bipartisanship, let me just say that I can't imagine two worse families for the honor. (Well, obviously, I can, but not among the plausible set.)

I can barely say how sad this makes me. I feel like a royalist watching Charles I getting his head chopped off and knowing I won't live to see any restoration. --ts

I'll give you that both Clintons are odious, but surely Bush the Elder was the last proper, grown-up President? It's W who was such a disaster.

Anyway, chin up. Teddy Kennedy is still dead.

So Bainbridge would have preferred it if Dukakis had beaten Bush I, or if Gore or Kerry had prevailed over Bush II? I doubt it. He'd probably respond that, if he had his druthers, both of the Bushes would have lost in the primaries. But who in the 1988 and 2000 GOP primaries was a better choice? Dole over Bush I? McCain over Bush II? That seems like wishful thinking, given their records, and each proved out of their depth when they did secure the nomination.
