American football, as dead as the Marlboro Man - chicagotribune.com

With all that college beef on parade this week, the NFL draft is a wonder of sports marketing, a televised pageant for the multibillion-dollar American football industry.

But there's something football fans should know:

Football is dead in America.

Meantime, in the more civilised parts of the sporting world: as rugby has become a professional sport it looks increasingly dangerous so that, I dare say, mothers are becoming reluctant to let their sons play that too. Even soccer is at some risk: apparently heading the ball may not be good for your marbles. It's a bugger and no mistake.
