Naw, there's no bias in academia. Keep on moving.

It's not a question of smarts--they're simply voting their perceived self-interest, like everyone else. Academics are a constituency, like Hispanics or farmers or soccer moms, and they quite accurately saw Obama as more likely than Romney to preserve their perks and subsidies.
