From Rob Hanson. Hmmm. Somebody should discuss what all this has to do with race and whether it's across the board, or more in sub-groups of the population and what that means. Also it seems you could do something with cross national experiments. Rates are much higher in Nordic countries than in Japan. What is it with those Nordics? Just the welfare state dissolving the family unit?
Stats like this are misleading. Although 40% of births may be to unmarried women, I doubt that 40% of US moms are unwed [as the title to ironically named 'eliminating bias'. There is probably a lower stat of unwed mothers, but the unwed mothers have multiple births. This reminds me of the divorce stats that are thrown about: "50% of all marriages end in divorce" This is also a misleading stat as serial divorcers increase the stats, where as those who stay married their whole life can't affect the stats as much because they will only have one marriage. [not accounting for death and subsequent remarriage]
