Spam war setback? Tom Smith

I use gmail because i's spam filter is amazingly powerful.  Yet, in the past week to 10 days, I have noticed an unusual amount of spam slipping through.  What gives?  Have spammers made some leap in the arms race between spammer and spam filter?
